The soon-to-be completed emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases (EREID) facility in Barangay San Simon, Cagayan de Oro City is being considered as a Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Mindanao.

‘I was very pleased about Regional (Department of Health) Director Dr. Adrian Suba-an’s announcement that he will work to establish the San Simon facility as an RITM facility in Mindanao. I won’t be around to see that happen but as they say, a journey of a thousand miles starts with one small step,’ Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Oscar Moreno said.

During Saturday noon’s (Oct. 31) press briefing, Mayor Moreno said a meeting with Director Suba-an, acting City Health Officer Dr. Lorraine Nery and JR Borja General Hospital chief Dr. Ramon Nery on the project raised the possibility of expanding the EREID facility into what Mayor Moreno hoped will be a ‘health complex.’

‘The facility sits on a five-hectare area and it can accommodate the health services that cannot be done at Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) due to their space limitations. For now, (we are building the foundation) of what it is intended to be (and what it can be in the future),’ Mayor Moreno said.

The EREID facility has a 75-bed capacity and is designed in coordination with the DOH and NMMC´s Infectious Diseases Department to receive mild to asymptomatic COVID-19 patients. It will house a bio-safety level 2 laboratory that will house the reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) machines for COVID-19 testing. #AntiCOVID19 #COVID19WatchCDO #LGUCDOcampaign #Yourgovernmentatwork #Kaabag #Hapsay #CDOCityHallCollaboration #TheBiggerPictureForCDO #NagkahiusaBatokCOVID-19
